It’s that magical time of year again—when calendars reset, motivation is suspiciously high, and I convince myself this is the year everything comes together. Armed with optimism and a fresh planner I may or may not use past January, I’ve created my New Year’s resolutions. They’re ambitious, realistic-ish, and sprinkled with just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
Let’s dive in.
1. Spending Less Money (A Bold Choice)
This year, I’m spending less money. Not saving money necessarily—let’s not get carried away—but spending less. The goal is to stop treating my debit card like a stress-relief button and start acting like someone who understands numbers.
This means:
- Fewer impulse purchases
- No “I deserve this” shopping sprees after mild inconvenience
- Pausing before checkout and asking, “Will this still spark joy in two weeks?”
This resolution will be tested daily by online ads that somehow know exactly what I want. But I’m determined to win. Or at least put up a good fight.
2. Traveling to Places I’ve Never Been
I want to see more of the world—or at least more places that aren’t already pinned in my phone’s photo album.
This year is about new destinations, new experiences, and getting lost (responsibly). I want to collect memories, not just souvenirs, and have stories that start with, “So I’d never been there before…”
Yes, this resolution slightly conflicts with “spending less money,” but I choose to believe in ✨balance✨ and the power of budgeting… occasionally.
3. No Soda for the Entire Year
This is my villain origin story.
No soda. Not one. Not “just on special occasions.” Not “only when eating pizza.” A full year without fizzy, sugary happiness.
The plan:
- Drink more water
- Pretend I don’t miss soda
- Casually mention “I don’t drink soda anymore” like it was easy
Will I stare longingly at soda fountains? Yes. Will I be dramatic about it? Absolutely. But I’m committed—for my health, my energy levels, and my ability to say I did something impressive.
4. One Cup of Coffee a Day (And That’s It)
One cup. One. Singular.
Coffee will be my only source of caffeine for the day, which means no energy drinks, no backup coffee, and no “emergency caffeine” excuses.
This will:
- Improve my sleep
- Reduce my caffeine dependence
- Force me to cherish that one cup like it’s a limited-edition luxury item
Bad coffee days will hit harder, but that just means I’ll become very intentional about quality over quantity. This is growth. Probably.
5. Work Hard, but Play Harder (Work/Life Balance Era)
This year, I’m officially entering my work hard, but play harder era. Productivity is important—but so is enjoying life and not answering emails at unreasonable hours.
The goal:
- Do great work
- Take breaks without guilt
- Remember that rest is not a reward—it’s a requirement
Life is more than to-do lists and deadlines, and I plan to protect my off-time like it’s a non-negotiable meeting on my calendar.
6. Go on More Walks
Simple. Underrated. Powerful.
I want to go on more walks—around the neighborhood, in new places, or just to clear my head. No step-count pressure. No speed requirements. Just moving my body and letting my thoughts wander.
Bonus benefits include:
- Fresh air
- Mental clarity
- Pretending I’m the main character in a movie montage
Sometimes the best ideas—and the best peace—show up when you slow down.
Final Thoughts (Before Reality Sets In)
These resolutions aren’t about perfection. They’re about intention. About making choices that feel good in the long run, even if I mess up along the way.
Will I stumble? Probably. Will I laugh at myself? Definitely. But this year is about growth, balance, and enjoying the journey—one walk, one cup of coffee, and one soda-free day at a time.
Here’s to a year of smarter spending, new adventures, better balance, and just enough caffeine to make it all happen. Cheers—preferably with water.
